How to Get Your Rough T-Shirts Incredibly Soft

There's nothing better than slipping into a really soft vintage T-shirt. Not only does it instantly give you street cred, especially if it's a cool band tee, but it also feels so light on your skin that it's almost like you're not wearing anything at all. But how do you get this look if you don't like shopping at thrift stores or flea markets? It's easy. You can make your new shirts look and feel used. Follow the steps below to give your new tees a vintage feel.

Ways to Make Your T-Shirts Softer

Here's how to make your T-shirts incredibly soft step-by-step:

Get a Combination Ready

In a big bucket, add water and vinegar or salt to give a new T-shirt an aged appearance. For every quart of water, use approximately 1/2 cup of salt or vinegar.
These ingredients help to open up the fibers, giving the cotton more volume, similar to adding volume to hair. This mixture will effectively soften the fabric fibers.

Soak Your Shirt

Soak your T-shirt in the mixture for about seven minutes.Seven minutes is usually sufficient to achieve the desired level of softness, though some people advise leaving the clothing in overnight. This method works best with materials made of cotton, cotton/polyester blends, or modal, which is the softest of all.

Normal Desiccate and Clean

After your garment has soaked, wash it in the washing machine using a mild detergent. Make sure to take it out of the dryer before it dries entirely. The garment could feel scratchy if it gets too dry. You want the shirt to hold onto some moisture, just like your skin, and then let it naturally air dry.

These techniques will turn your new T-shirts into incredibly soft, retro-inspired favourites.
